Hinwick House Information

Hinwick House is the quintessential English country house estate, an aristocratic Grade I listed Queen Anne mansion set in 37 acres of beautiful parkland.  This magnificent family home and unique piece of England’s heritage has recently undergone a beautiful and extensive restoration to return it to its full former glory.  The elegant estate lies in the heart of England’s home counties, just 70 miles to the north of London, and offers luxurious accommodation for up to 36 guests.

The beautiful house comprises of two parts: the original Queen Anne mansion was built in 1710 for the Orlebar family, who modelled the plans on Buckingham Palace, plus a later Victorian wing added in 1859.  The frieze cut into the stone on the exterior façade that looks over the lawned gardens and parkland towards the village of Hinwick depicts Diana the huntress and is a tribute to John Orlebar’s wife Diana Astry whose dowry is said to have paid for the building’s construction.  The couple’s love of hunting is also reflected in the oil paintings which line the galleried staircase of the main hall.

Beautiful period features can be found in both sections of the building including decorative plasterwork by John Woolston and magnificent main staircase crowned by the stunning 20ft crystal chandelier in the West Hall.

The high-ceilinged rooms of the Queen Anne mansion have a stately elegance perfect for entertaining family and friends or hosting special events and weddings.  From the grandeur of the Drawing Room and opulent Dining Room to the magnificent Great Hall with its exposed stone walls and impressive stone fireplace, Hinwick House offers many wonderful spaces for relaxing and entertaining. There are no less than two bars to enhance your stay, a sophisticated cocktail bar in the main house and a spectacular lounge bar adjacent to the Great Hall, with beautiful chandeliers and a lovely fireplace creating a very special atmosphere.

The Victorian wing is a sympathetic addition to the main house that was originally added to accommodate the household and essential service areas and still boasts the original bell board from the bell and pulley system installed to summon service.  Under the recent renovation project, these rooms have been transformed into beautiful bedrooms and suites to add additional sumptuous accommodation to the original house.

The house retains one of the most attentive but discreet households in the country, including the head Housekeeper and her team, Estate Manager, Grounds team, Game Keeper and the Chauffeurs – each focused on running the house and estate with ‘impeccable grace’.

All of Hinwick House’s romantic suites and dreamy bedrooms offer beautiful views out over the grounds, luxury linens and the height of modern comfort, some featuring charming window seats with idyllic views or luxurious four posters.  Many of the rooms feature historical artefacts and artworks that reflect the history of the house, its owners or the periods in which it was built.  The elegant bathrooms enjoy luxury fittings, luxe bathroom linens and modern amenities sensitively added to retain the period charm of the house.

Relax in the wood panelled library, dine in style in the grandeur of the dining room or the drama of the Great Hall, enjoy a game of billiards or a cocktail in the triple-height long bar, or simply take a walk around the grounds, which extend from the manicured lawns, clock tower and all-weather tennis court, to the crumbling dovecote, walled garden, two ornamental lakes, deer park with ha-ha and rolling parkland, orchard and pasture.

The house offers a variety of accommodations, including en-suite rooms and some with interconnecting doors which are ideal for family groups.  There are also two self-contained apartments in the Victorian wing of the main house; the George V Suite and the beautiful Misanthrope apartment.  In the grounds stand two cottages, just a stride from the main house and known as the turret cottages: Anthea and Wisteria.

Each of the two-bedroomed cottages has its own kitchen and sitting room and has benefitted from the recent stylish redesign with modern amenities and luxurious fittings.  They are ideal for family groups who wish for a little more privacy or distance from the main house or, since they also boast landing studies, could also serve for useful staff accommodation.

Hinwick House is licenced for weddings, with capacity for up to 120 guests for a ceremony inside the house or up to 84 guests on round tables for the wedding breakfast. For receptions over this number, the grounds are a beautiful setting for a marquee, with a choice of the courtyard immediately adjoining the Great Hall or on the picturesque lawns overlooking the grounds and the beautiful Queen Anne house. Hinwick House is only available on an exclusive use basis, and there are no restrictions so you can enjoy your day however you wish, in complete privacy.

This beautiful country house is the full package: attentive staff, luxurious accommodation, fabulous comfort and beautiful possibilities for entertaining in the midst of scenic private parkland just a 35-minute helicopter flight from London City Airport.
