The nearby Elan Estate features the spectacular Elan Valley Dams, built during the 1800s with five reservoirs in total. In nearby Hereford, the cathedral is home to the Mappa Mundi, a wonderful medieval map which is well worth a visit. Western Herefordshire also offers the famous Black and White trail, which is a tour of around 40 miles which encompasses some of the most intact black and white villages in the UK.
For little ones, there is a lovely farm park in nearby Kingston, the Small Breed Centre, and pony trekking at the Grange Trekking Centre, located near Hay on Wye. Canoeing is very popular with families and lazy days can be spent meandering the river. For older children, there is a mountain biking XC centre at Hopton Wood, and an outdoor activity centre called Oaker Wood Leisure.
